About Kathryn Lee Kalisz

Kathryn Lee Kalisz, an artist, colorist and writer, has spent all of her adult life studying color, its use, its affect on people and its relationship to their well-being.

Ms. Kalisz was born in St. Marys, Pennsylvania and currently resides in Bristol, Connecticut. She is the mother of three daughters.

Kathryn’s extensive research into color led to her employment as a colorist with Munsell Color, a division of Gretag-Macbeth Corporation, Newburgh, New York. She left Munsell in 1991 to concentrate on her art and continue her studies. She currently teaches art privately and her love of color, nature and abstract design is evident in her paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylics.

Ms. Kalisz was included in “Who’s Who of American Women,” 2000-2001, Millennium Edition for her innovative work as an artist, colorist and teacher. Kathryn is a member of the International Association of Colour, and the Association of Image Consultants International.

Her recent book, Understanding Your Color, is the culmination of her love for color and interest in color’s relationship to the human being.

Kathryn Kalisz-Donovan - PROFESSIONAL STATEMENT

As a young art student, I was profoundly intrigued by color. As a young artist, I was profoundly intrigued by the human being. The study of both color and psychology occupied my life for twenty years, and culminated in the writing of a textbook entitled, Understanding Your Color. This book teaches the art and science of color as it pertains to the human being. Scientifically, it explains exactly what color is and describes its powerful purpose in our lives. It further explains how a human being’s personal coloration is related to his or her innate personality traits and behavioral tendencies.

My studies and experience in the field of color led to my employment with Munsell Color, from 1985 to 1991. Munsell Color is recognized as the world’s leader in color technology and color communication, and I am extremely proud to have been a part of carrying on the work of America’s greatest colorist, Albert Munsell. During my employment there, I learned the science of color and was amazed and honored to be taught by the inventor of the first color computer, Mr. Hugh Davidson, as well as other esteemed scientists in the field of color. I left Munsell Color in 1991 with the knowledge, experience and confidence I needed to teach. I have perfected the ability to communicate and teach the fascinating and abstract nature of color from both an artistic and scientific viewpoint. Furthermore, and most importantly, I teach the purpose of color in our lives. My years as an art instructor have shown me that, if presented in a logical way for a definite purpose, the subject of color is both easy to teach and easy to learn.

My goal as an instructor is to bring an understanding and appreciation of color to my students; such that it would never be lost or forgotten, but will rather be used daily as a functional working tool to improve, enliven, and enhance their lives.

Letter of Recommendation for Kathryn Kalisz:

Sometime about the year 2000, Kitty began to give physical form to a vision over she had been creating over a lifetime. She began teaching others about how color and light work to enhance our daily lives, affecting our physical and emotional well-being. She wrote her book, Understanding Your Color, launched a website, KaliszInColor.com, and began Color Analysis training seminars to support this effort. She began manufacturing the materials needed to help others get started in color analysis, and she began offering color therapy products to aid those looking for natural healing.

Due to a close working and family relationship with her, I know that one question asked about this woman is simply, "why should I listen to YOU? Who are you, and what makes you an expert?" I've also noticed that she is somewhat humble in this regard, and tends to publicly downplay her background and expertise. So, I've taken a moment to put together my thoughts on this woman's remarkable career and what her efforts have played in my life. If you're thinking "she's related, of course you'll say nice things about her," you can temper that thought with the information that she is my MOTHER-IN-LAW.

As for me, I've been an artist my whole life, and I've been paid for it professionally since 1997. Since then, I've met and worked with a wide variety of people who use color in their day to day lives. None have outclassed Kitty in her skills and expertise with color, and very few even come close.

When I first met Kitty in 1990, she struck me very quickly as a mix between an artist and a mad scientist. She had stacks of paint cans in the living room. Notebooks were scattered about, filled with paint daubs and written formulae. Swatches and snippets of paint-coated paper were stacked on end tables and shelves. Books by various doctors and scientists who studied color and light populated various flat surfaces. The apartment was being slowly transformed into a make shift color laboratory.

Something was definitely brewing inside her. She had found an incredible interest in how color and light interacted with the human being, and was gathering information as fast as she was able. It seemed as though her sub-conscious mind was making critical connections and alerting her to great importance, but her conscious mind was still racing to catch up. She knew there was something wonderful there, but couldn't yet define it.

Shortly thereafter, I visited the Munsell color labs to see what she did there. An elite team of professional colorists were studying color and logging volumes of color data. They also applied their findings by creating Color Tolerance sets (CT sets) for clients. Their clients, mostly very large national and multinational corporations, needed colors defined for everything from printed materials to packaging to clothing to food. The fact is, the human eye is so sensitive, it can tell when something isn't right, even when the conscious mind isn't aware of it. People don't like inconsistency since it makes them feel insecure with a company's ability to deliver quality every time. Companies do not want their customers to feel insecure about their products and CT sets help define the acceptable limits of color deviation in the manufacture or production of colored items.

Did you know that Yoo-hoo chocolate drinks have a color standard? It must be the right shade of brown so that we will drink it without thinking there is something horribly wrong with it. In fact, many processed foods fall into that same category. Cheese, butter, processed meats, sauces. Your favorite cola or iced tea is probably color toleranced. Many of us use color instinctively to gauge if food is spoiled or not, so color is critical in this market.

Letter of Recommendation for Kathryn Kalisz, continued:

Color is also critical in many non-food products in our day to day lives, such as soap, solid antiperspirant, shampoo, medicines and other similar items. Many companies are very strict about the colors of their logos, vehicles, printed materials, packaging and other items they are identified with.

The work done by Kitty and the rest of her team at Munsell is used as a foundation for today's color technologies. Gretag-Macbeth, the parent company of Munsell, manufactures and sells computerized color matching equipment and software that is used in a variety of markets. For instance, your local hardware store uses this technology to create color formulae by matching color samples that you bring them. Graphics and printing professionals around the world use their systems to calibrate their computer scanners, cameras, printers and monitors, so that their images import correctly, display correctly and print correctly in the final run.

As an artist, I'm very aware of the impact the research that she, and others like her at the Munsell color labs, have had on our world, especially in my field. I'm aware of what she is capable of, and what she has to offer. I'm also aware that my unique position gives me a clear perspective of what she has helped contribute to the culture I live and work in, and gives me an opportunity to share it with you.

Think about this...

If you've ever eaten cheese just the right shade of yellow, or read a magazine with the right color print and graphics; if you've ever bought a package with the correct colored logo and design, or matched paint at your local hardware store, your life has already been affected in some way by the work of Kathryn Kalisz. It might not be earth shattering, it might not make the evening news, but the research done by Kitty and a select few like her has been used to touch your life through hundreds, if not thousands, of little, almost unnoticed items every day, bringing you a little more consistency and a small, subtle sense of security.

Not many of us can say that.

She now uses that same knowledge and expertise in color and light to help people live healthier, more vibrant lives. If you want to know for yourself how you can benefit personally, I invite you to thumb through her book and browse the articles on her website. I guarantee you'll learn something new and inspiring.
